Forgot how much I love this one. A … motivational videomontage I did for an Art class I teach (not a video class - Ideas and Imagery) Motivational, in a sense, but also to lead into a discussion of combining visual elements etc. to create motifs, if you will, that bring a harmony and continuity to a construction of disparate elements, and construct a new conception that is somewhat universal, and very… malleable, for lack of a better word. (Not that there isn’t one - I just lack it, and don’t want to think on it.) Malleable and universal in the sense that it can be interpreted quite broadly to suit one’s particular outlook or circumstances at any given time.
It’s the first and only time I’ve used music other than my own in videos, but I felt that it made it more “accessible” in some fashion, relative to its original purpose - in class use. It includes Radiohead’s “Karma Police” in its entirety, part of Afrika Bambataa’s “Electrify”, and elements from Godspeedyou!blackemperor/A Silver Mount Zion - both added, as well as those originally included in video segments from Harmony Korine’s film “Mr. Lonely”. I also made extensive use of footage from his film “Julien Donkey Boy” featuring Werner Herzog prominently. There are also spoken elements by John Cage, among many other found/collected elements.
As a visual artist whose focus has been mostly with collage/photomontage as well as painting, sculpture, and printmaking, and not having any actual videography skills, nor desires, I found great pleasure working in videomontage in an extension of my preferred collage techniques, which I undertook to make videos for some of the music I’ve made over the years in many analog basement jam sessions.
All the videos are available here http://www.youtube.com/user/taocomB?feature=mhee - if one is feeling like youtubing - I’ve noticed tumblrs don’t seem to care much for clicking through to videos. Its more of a statc image and animated gif. kind of place it seems.
